BRIALYN

I’d stood by while Devryn fought McKinnon, my heart in my chest until I’d realized just how little of a threat the man actually was. But the people rushing him? These were not challengers. These were not men acting in accordance with Hunter’s laws. This wasn’t acceptable defiance, this was…madness.

I didn’t have to stand by for this.

Magic, strong and powerful, thrummed in my veins, and I embraced its call. It spun out of me, reaching into the earth, finding seeds the wind had carried from Faerie but which had never grown simply because Hunter territory liked being a coastal plain.

But Hunter had me now, and my power called to those seeds. Vines sprouted from the earth, growing from seedling to mature plant in the span of a few seconds. At my will they reached out, ensnaring the legs of those who would have buried Devryn under a force too large for one man to fight. The vines wrenched them all down to the ground and held them firm. The mob drew knives and hacked at my plants, until the vines grew further and tore those weapons from their grips, until their entire bodies were at the mercy of my magic.

When they realized that—when everyone realized that—all eyes in the clearing turned to me. I was the only outsider in their group, easily recognizable with my slim build and silver hair, my blazing amethyst eyes. Once, maybe even yesterday, I would have shrank from those gazes. I would have thought that their hostility, their accusation, meant something.

Today, I simply shrugged it off and picked my way through the downed bodies to Devryn’s side. I ignored the muttered insults as I went—“Elvish whore,” “Faerie bitch,”and so on.

But past the profanities, the one the thing that was uttered over and over again was, “Who is she?”

Devryn answered that question as I reached him and he took my hand. “This is Brialyn Hevera. Princess of Faerie, second of the Six, and my mate. You can kneel to the new Lady of Hunter.” His gaze flicked dispassionately over the men I’d subdued, lingering on the vines that bound them. “Or she can make you.”
